La Maleza
La Maleza (2025)
from the Spanish for “wild growth/undergrowth” or, understood to mean “sickness,"  is a dance work that delves into the world of "weeds," tenacious plants defying categorization and thriving in forgotten crevices. Plants who have the wisdom to find nourishment in troubled ecosystems behave in defiance of an overculture fixated on management; they parallel the resilience and persistence of marginalized human communities. Through improvisation and ritual-like movement the work asks: What does it mean to be uprooted and/or find roots in unfamiliar, or often inhospitable, spaces? What can the perspective and intelligence of a plant teach us about healing?

“I wonder whom I should ask for help? Who is suited for this particular flavor of patriarchal capitalist death cult collapse? I think the answer is growing next to my car.. in the field near my house…[it] likes disturbed soil…Likes to salvage and adapt.. I think my saint is a weed.” - Sophie Strand
Much gratitude to the Dance Sourch Houston team, the DHS AIR residency, as well as the Houston Met for their incredible material and creative support in this process. Gracias also to my family, friends and community. Solos don’t exist, we all thrive through mutual care.
