Dance Shorts: College Film Festival
What Will Remain
A dance film. Has been selected for the Gala at the Dance Shorts: College Film Festival!
Description: "The University of South Florida is excited to announce an opportunity for students to share their dance films in the 2nd Annual Dance Shorts: College Film Festival.
Dance Shorts: College Film Festival will spotlight today's generation of up and coming "techno-choreographers." The film festival will feature short dance films that are between two and six minutes in length. These dance films can be narrative, experimental, or abstract and incorporate any combination of music, lights, costumes, and location with dance and today's film technology.
All films will be viewed and adjudicated by invited professionals within the dance and film community. The highest scoring pieces will be showcased at a film gala on April 18th of 2014. Out of these top pieces cash and/or prize awards will be given to the best films."
Orbit Design
Orbit Design: a performance featuring dance and percussion
Sunday, April 12 @ 8 pm, Detroit Observatory, University of Michigan, 1398 E Ann St, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48109
Pre-Performance Discussion with Derek Bermel & Robert Savit, UM Professor of Physics at 7:30 pm
Composed by Derek Bermel in 2012, Orbit Design is a musical algorithm for performers of any discipline, in which improvised material is structured using pre-determined rules. Its concept is based around the dynamic, yet unpredictable, movement and interactions of three (or more) celestial bodies under Newton's law of gravity.
This performance of Orbit Design is a collaboration between the departments of dance and percussion within the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. Performers are dispersed throughout the Observatory, while audience members can walk between rooms, experiencing a visual representation of the relationship between visual and sonic motion. Bermel's work is much more than a musical composition; rather it is a journey through time and space, as well as an exploration of human interaction.
